Set in the 1950s in the deprived Poplar district of London's incredibly poor East End, new nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) accepted a job from what she believed was a small private hospital and instead is an Anglican convent. Leaving her privileged lifestyle behind, Jenny works with the Sisters and other midwives of Nonnatus House, making friends like Nurse Chummy (Miranda Hart) and Nurse Trixie (Helen George) while performing nursing duties for the community. With almost 100 babies being born each month in the East End, their main job is to bring safe childbirth to the women in the area. The series was created by Heidi Thomas and based off the best-selling trilogy of memoirs by midwife Jennifer Worth.
