A faint biblical prophecy becomes true, much to the surprise of the global population when a sudden rapture suddenly causes two percent of the world’s population to inexplicably disappear. The series focuses not on those who were taken, but those left behind in the American suburban town of Mapleton, New York; the residents of which must now deal with the aftermath of becoming god’s unwanted children as they deal with the personal and social costs of being ‘The Leftovers’.
