A dog named Bailey (Gad) is devoted to his first owner, but often thinks about what his own purpose is on Earth. As he helps his owner make it through life, Bailey eventually dies of old age, but leaves the world confident that his human is in a good place. When he wakes up as a new dog with new owners, he uses the experiences of his former life to help them. Through all of his lifetimes, he searches for the meaning of his own existence. By showing his humans how to laugh and love, he fulfills his own destiny.
