After finding out he has a newborn baby, accused murder and rapist Brian Nichols (Oyelowo) escapes from the Fulton County courthouse during his trial, desperate to see his son. After killing the presiding judge and a court reporter, he quickly becomes the subject of a city-wide manhunt. He kidnaps a young, single mother and recovering drug addict, Ashley Smith (Mara), and holds her hostage in her own apartment. Ashley seeks guidance in Rick Warren’s inspirational book, "The Purpose Driven Life," and begins to read it aloud to her captor, hoping to show him a better way out.
