After a fun-filled day full of laughter and alcohol, Senator Ted Kennedy (Clarke) drunkenly veers his car off of a narrow bridge and plunges into the water below. Although he manages to escape the doomed vehicle, his passenger, his brother’s former secretary Mary Jo Kopechne (Mara), does not, and drowns trapped in the car. It isn’t until hours later, once he’s sobered up and contacted his lawyer, that he finally contacts the police. A massive cover-up and media blitz begins, with Kennedy’s presidential aspirations cast into doubt in the wake of the incident.
