After separating from her husband (Sheen), Alice (Witherspoon) tries to restart her life by moving back to Los Angeles with her daughters. For her 40th birthday party, her friends take her out for a night of drinking and dancing, where she meets a trio of aspiring filmmakers in need of a place to live. Alice allows them to stay in her guest house while they get back on their feet, and even strikes up a relationship with one of them. When her estranged husband unexpectedly shows up looking to repair their marriage, her new family and romance collide with her old life.
