After the sudden death of his brother, Lee Chandler (Affleck) is made the legal guardian of his nephew, Patrick (Hedges). He is reluctant, and attempts to find another guardian for the boy, but ultimately realizes he owes it to his brother to return to his hometown and take care of his nephew. Still dealing with the loss of his father, Patrick is extremely difficult and acts out. The situation is complicated because of Lee's proximity to his estranged wife. Making the most of a terrible situation, Lee tries to put the family back together.
