Charlie (Robertson) lives with her single mother, Marie (McElhone), in a small apartment. One day, she wakes up to find a stranger cooking something delicious. Learning that his name is Mr. Church (Murphy), they also discover that he was hired by Marie’s deceased lover to take care of her as she goes through breast cancer. Six years later, Mr. Church has become a member of the family. As Charlie faces the inevitable death of her mother, she grows closer to Mr. Church. Throughout every struggle, they come to rely on each other and their strong bond.
