Sam’s (Crudup) life as a high-profile executive takes a drastic turn when his son is killed in a school shooting. Living in a sailboat and nursing a growing dependence on alcohol, he one day comes across a box filled with demo tapes and songs written by his son. Sam eventually gets up the will to perform one of the songs at a local bar, where it has a profound influence on a young musician in the audience. Despite the marked age difference, the unlikely pair becomes a part of a rock band that ends up having a positive influence in both their lives
