Hsiao's stepmother frames her fiancé Lung when he refuses to forfeit their engagement & sends him to prison. To save him, Hsiao disguises as Lung to take the Imperial exam & ranks 1st place. Impressed by Hsiao, the Emperor weds the Princess to 'him'.
