After her divorce, Rachel Watson (Blunt) is forced to pass her old house on the train. To distract herself from the painful memories, she watches a young couple, Megan (Bennett) and Scott (Evans) Hipwell. She fantasizes about them in her head, creating a wonderful dream life about how they are a perfect family. One day, as the train passes, she sees something shocking. She wakes up the next day with no memory and covered in bruises to discover that Megan is missing. Rachel hunts for the truth of what happened to them that night.
