Teenager Starr (Stenberg) lives two lives -- her home is in a poor and mostly black neighborhood, but she goes to a rich and mostly white prep school, and has a white boyfriend (Apa). When her childhood friend Khalil (Smith) is shot and killed in front of her by a white police officer, she finds herself torn between her two worlds as unrest sweeps through her community, with her loving mother (Hall) and father (Hornsby) supporting her as she struggles to follow her heart and stand up for what she feels is right, despite risk of shattering the delicate equilibrium between her two lives.
