Major League rookie Hopper Gibson (Simmons) has been training all his life to be a big-league baseball pitcher, with extensive coaching from his father, Hopper Sr. (Hawke). When he starts losing control of his pitches, he is sent back to the minor leagues and begins having sessions with an unorthodox sports psychologist named Dr. Mobley (Giamatti). As the sessions continues and the pressure on Hopper builds, his medical team begins to uncover hidden conflicts between Hopper and his father, who put his son through gruelling training exercises and abuse. Dr. Mobley tries to help Hopper overcome his past.
