Gardner Elliot (Butterfield) is the first human born on Mars, and has never seen Earth. His mother, an astronaut, died during childbirth, and the only evidence he has of his father is a photo. Incredibly lonely, his only friends are a robot and Tulsa (Robertson), a street-smart girl that he video chats with. Wanting to discover more about his home planet and his family, he leaves Mars and arrives on Earth, despite the risk to his health. Along with Tulsa, he attempts to find his father and learn what it means to be human.
