George (Gere) is homeless and desperate, finding himself living on the streets of New York City with declining health and few options. With temporary housing no longer available to him, he finally seeks refuge at Bellevue Hospital, Manhattan’s largest intake centre for homeless men. Bellevue proves harsh and crowded, but when George is befriended by Dixon (Vereen), a man well-versed in shelter survival, he begins to look at the possibility of repairing his relationship with his estranged daughter (Malone).
