Alcatraz was America's first maximum security penitentiary, designed for high-risk and high-profile criminals. It housed infamous gangsters and convicts like Al Capone, 'Machine Gun' Kelly and 'The Birdman', Robert Stroud, as well as many other criminals. Over 29 years, these inmates challenged the prison repeatedly. 'The Rock' was tough, but the inmates were convinced they were tougher.
