Set in the latter years of the Tang dynasty, "Beyond the Realm of Conscience" tells the story of Lau Sam Ho and Yiu Kam Ling, two young women who serve the imperial family. They each take very different paths toward political power. Whereas Sam Ho believes in benevolence and kindness, Kam Ling uses cruel, calculating tactics on her way to becoming Emperor Lee Yi's concubine. Eventually, Kam Ling's paranoia about ceding power causes her to make up false allegations about Sam Ho murdering the empress.
