Adapted by Abi Morgan (`Iron Lady', `The Hour') from Sebastian Faulks' modern classic, the two-part `Birdsong' tells a tale of love, loss, heroism and hope during the decade spanning World War I. It centers on a young Englishman named Stephen Wraysford, who arrives in northern France in 1910 and begins an illicit, heated affair with Isabelle Azaire. Years later, while serving on the Western Front, Stephen miraculously bumps into his former love, who has no explanation for why she left him. Haunted by his memories, Stephen goes into the Battle of the Somme tormented, not sure he will ever see Isabelle again.
