In the summer of 1953, Winston Churchill, now prime minister for the second time and in his late 70s, suffers a life-threatening stroke, which is kept secret from the world. Nurse Millie Appleyard is rushed to a secret location, where she discovers her patient's identity. Meanwhile, his political friends and foes engage in plot and counter-plot over his successor. As Churchill's family gather at his bedside, unsure if he will pull through, long-buried tensions begin to surface.
