When his father and younger brother die trying to recover gunpowder from a bomb to sell for food, 13-year-old Toto Riina is left to provide for his family, which he struggles to do. So he joins together with equally impoverished friend Biagio and other struggling young men to survive their poverty and escape a future of being peasants. When the guys' courage and determination is noted by crime boss Dr Navarra and his right-hand man, Luciano Liggio, they invite Toto and his friends to join their crime family. But when Toto and his group help Liggio turn on and murder Dr Navarra, they take over the crime ring in the town of Corleone, with Toto eventually ascending to become the new mafia boss. Biagio, however, leaves the group and becomes a policeman, putting him on a path to stopping the killing spree Toto and his gang are on. When Biagio gets the opportunity to end the group's crimes, he faces a crisis of conscience as he must decide whether or not to shoot his childhood friend.
