Specials

A deep dive into a song and its place in the story of two artists. 'A Foggy Day' was written by Gershwin for a 1937 film and has been recorded by some of the greatest singers of our times - but it's through Judy Garland that Rufus Wainwright got to know the song and decided to create his own version of it. For Radio 4 Rufus takes the song apart, exploring how it works, and reveals how he approaches his own performance of it. Contributors include pianist Jacob Mann, and Judy Garland biographer John Fricke, who tells the story of Judy Garland's version, and explores the significance of 'A Foggy Day' in the setlist for her lauded Carnegie Hall concert in 1961 and of the concert as a turning point in her life.
