Both Alex and his co-worker, Helen, are going through a rough time, having just come out of relationships (Alex is divorced; Helen's fiance died just before the wedding). They take solace with each other, but their on-again, off-again romance is hampered by their irritation with each other on the job at the talent agency they work for.
