Armed with a 1913 copy of Bradshaw's Handbook, Michael Portillo embarks on an epic journey across Asia, on a 2,500-mile railway journey that takes him across six countries, covering major cities such as Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta and Hanoi. Along the way Michael meets locals, who help him to explore local food, culture and crafts. He also reflects the history on European colonial rule, and how this left its mark on the region, and the examines the hopes that people have for the future.
