As the Birling family celebrate daughter Sheila's engagement, an unexpected visitor leaves them in turmoil. The Birling Family - successful Northern industrialists - are celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to the son of a rival business family, Gerald Croft. Then Inspector Goole makes an appearance, to report the suicide of a young woman in the infirmary. As the play progresses, the Inspector weeds out information that implicates each of the party as being somehow connected with the girl and - to a greater or lesser extent - responsible for her death.
