Experienced social worker Miriam, played by Sarah Lancashire, is thrust into the spotlight when a young girl named Kiri goes missing during a supervised visit to the home of her biological grandfather. As the search for Kiri commences, questions are asked about those close to her, including Miriam, Kiri's soon-to-be foster parents, and other estranged family members. As the drama unfolds and a police investigation progresses, matters of race and media sensationalism come to the fore, and previous assumptions are tested.
