Last Chance Highway
Animals
Overcrowded shelters and a lack of resources mean many dogs in the South, where spay and neuter laws are not strictly enforced, are on death row. But thanks to the work of volunteers Shelly Bookwalter and Kyle Peterson, thousands of dogs are rescued each year and transported to new homes in the Northeast. "Last Chance Highway" documents this mission, as Bookwalter leads the effort to find foster families for strays and unclaimed shelter dogs, and Peterson, the owner of a pet transport service, drives a trailer full of dogs thousands of miles each week, to states stretching from Pennsylvania to Maine. Since 2004, Peterson and his crew of helpers, including country singer and songwriter Lucas Hoge, have relocated nearly 30,000 adopted dogs.
