Margaret Forster's much-acclaimed novel, published in 1990, tells the story of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's maid, Lily Wilson, who worked for the Brownings for many years. The friendship between the two women was often strained by Elizabeth's selfish demands, but Wilson learnt much from her employer, not least about the vicissitudes of love.
