`Midwinter of the Spirit' is a crime drama based on the novels by Phil Rickman, adapted by BAFTA-winning screenwriter Stephen Volk. The three-part series follows protagonist Merrily Watkins, a country vicar, who is a recent widow to an unfaithful husband. Despite her emotional turmoil, Merrily throws herself into her work, much to the disapproval of her 16-year-old daughter, Jane. Mentoring the vicar is Rev Huw Owen, who also guides her through the dark side of their spiritual work. When a horrific murder is announced the local police approach Merrily to help with the investigation, which appears to have paranormal connections.
