`Harry Potter' actor Miriam Margolyes embarks on a road trip through the heartlands of Middle America, travelling almost a thousand miles from Chicago to New Orleans. Along the way, Miriam explores a number of different communities and environments, such as summer camps, county jails, and all-girl motorbike gangs, whose visions of their own country challenge everything she thought she knew about America. She visits one of the most dangerous housing projects in the country to learn about gangs and associated violence, attends a mass citizenship ceremony in Indiana to ask why people still want to become Americans despite the current climate of anti-immigration, and explores both sides of the supposed "American Dream".
