Food writer and journalist Nigel Slater goes on a Middle Eastern food adventure, exploring some of the oldest and grandest cuisines in the world. He begins in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, where he is invited to celebrate Eid and try a dish called fatteh with a family. Later, he travels south to Nabatieh near Israel, and east to the Beqaa Valley close to the Syrian border. Later, Nigel Slater visits Turkey. Travelling from the history-laden city of Istanbul, where he gets a taste of the long history of Ottoman influence on the city's cuisine, Nigel visits the rural heartlands of Central Anatolia, and through the mountains of the Black Sea, discovering a landscape rich with tradition and local flavour.
