Following the death of her fiance, Sarah Burton moves from London back to her hometown of Yorkshire to become the headmistress of a struggling high school for girls in town. Robert Carne, whose family has gained immense wealth through hundreds of years of farming the South Riding, is haunted by love and has spent most of the farm's income from the past 20 years trying to wipe out the guilt he feels for the woman he thinks he destroyed. When Sarah returns to the South Riding, she clashes with this handsome farmer and, ultimately, must choose between him or her career as Robert wins her heart.
