Each year, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., honors a handful of celebrities for contributions made to the performing arts. The 34th annual ceremony is heavy on honorees who are known for their work in music. The year's honorees are Tony-winning singer and actress Barbara Cook, Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Neil Diamond, Grammy-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, and Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep. As is the tradition from previous years, a number of musical acts perform at the gala to pay tribute to this year's honorees, who sit with President Obama and his wife, Michelle, during the festivities.
