Four elderly women from all walks of life move in with each other in Florida to form "The Golden Girls." The owner of the house is Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), a widowed Southern belle with six children and a slew of male admirers. Fellow widower Rose Nylund (Betty White) is sweet, but occasionally insulting, and moves to Miami from her hometown of St. Olaf, Minn. Divorcee Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur) is a substitute teacher from Brooklyn who originally moved to Miami with her husband, but he left her for a young flight attendant. Last to join the house is Dorothy's overly sarcastic and constantly scheming mother Sophia (Estelle Getty), after a fire ruins her retirement home. The women get involved in a number of various problems and deal with issues like harassment, impotence and death.
