In this documentary series historian Peter Barton examines the events leading up to the Battle of the Somme. Known as one of the bloodiest battles in human history with fatalities in the millions, Barton heads to the battlefield to explain the British failures that led to over 20,000 deaths on the first day of the Offensive. Flipping the coin, the historian goes on to reveal how skilled enemy strategies gave them an edge. In the first episode Barton discusses how the Germans used the landscape of the Somme to their advantage and reveals how much the opposition knew of Allied plans.
