Deborah (Zellweger) and Ron (Kinnear) have everything a happy couple needs, with the exception of a loving marriage. Deborah allows him to stay after she uncovers his unfaithfulness, but one of her conditions is that he volunteer with her at a local rescue mission for the homeless. There, she meets a down-on-his-luck man (Hounsou) that she’s seen in her dreams, and she befriends him with the belief that he’s destined for great things. Much to her surprise, Ron also befriends the man, and their mutual relationships with him help to strengthen their marriage.
