Dr. Martin Ellingham was a successful London surgeon before he developed a fear of blood that forced him to change his profession. He takes up the position of general practitioner in the small Cornish hamlet of Portwenn, where he spent his childhood holidays with his now widowed Aunt Joan Norton. Along with the new job and new surroundings, Martin's complete lack of personal skills and human understanding makes him stick out like a sore thumb. His aunt provides emotional support as the doctor's ill-mannered attitude resonates with his patients and the town. Amid his social awkwardness, Martin attempts to share his feelings with his crush, primary school teacher Louisa Glasson. The television series is a spin-off on actor Martin Clunes' role in the U.K. film 'Saving Grace' (2000).
